In recent meeting session on Nov 16, the Vice President - General Secretary of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Phan Anh Son and the President and CEO of Winrock International (WI) (USA) Rodney Ferguson agreed to further discuss strengthening the relationship between Vietnam and foreign NGOs.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Phan Anh Son reaffirmed with the guest about the key activities of VUFO and The People's Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM), the functional body under VUFO, specializing in issues related to foreign NGOs. He also emphasized the role of people-to-people diplomacy in strengthening solidarity, friendship and cooperation with the peoples of other countries, maintaining a peaceful environment, and mobilizing external resources in Vietnam.

Also, Son highly appreciated WI's contributions in Vietnam, saying that VUFO looks forwards to become partners and to help assist WI more than following the rules and regulations in Vietnam.

"The need and priorities of different provinces and cities, agencies had changed dramatically, I propose WI to co-chair workshop to discuss ideas about the changes in education, public health organize workshops with selected foreign NGOs", he said.

The host and the guest both agreed that such activities will benefit not only for VUFO and WI, but also for other foreign NGOs. They proposed further discussion on how WI can join VUFO to give new, updated cooperation initiatives in the context of complicated global context.

Mr. Rodney Ferguson, WI President and CEO commented that the current environmental issues in Vietnam are unique and that they are changing due to the economic development. The WI's leader looks forward to work together with VUFO to share their experiences and lessons regarding those changes.

"One of WI's principle for development is greater cooperation with the country through partners, stronger relationship with local NGOs and government. We need to hear what assistance that allows you to reach the highest level of development. Vietnam is now a fast-approaching country with a middle-income status, that means your needs had changed, drastically becoming a post-industrial, information and technology country."

The guest also congratulated the 72nd anniversary of VUFO's Tradition Day (November 17, 1950 - November 17, 2022) and expressed admiration for the tradition and outstanding achievements of VUFO throughout the years.

WI's delegation signing a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Nov 15 was one of the highlights activities during this visit.

Also launched on Nov 15, "Reducing Pollution Project" is also a key project of WI in the current period with a budget of about US $1.8 million.

The goal of the project is to promote local initiatives and to enhance resources for local organizations and networks to tackle environmental pollution challenges such as waste or plastic waste management, air pollution, water pollution, etc. Through collective action, addressing pollution, and establishing a network of stakeholders from the community, local government and private sectors jointly identify and implement solutions to the pollution challenge.
