Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Exchange: Reflecting on History, Building the Future

The Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations, in collaboration with the Cuban Embassy in Viet Nam and the Hai Duong Provincial People's Committee, organized the Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Exchange on August 23. The event marked the 71st anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack (July 26, 1953 - 2024).

The event was attended by Chargé d'Affaires and Deputy Ambassador of Cuba to Viet Nam Joy Puentes Saldise, Vice President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations Nguyen Ngoc Hung, Vice Chairman of the Hai Duong Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Minh Hung and about 70 delegates, including embassy officials, members of the Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Association, students, and members of the Vietnamese community who had studied or lived in Cuba.

In his remarks, Vice Chairman of the Hai Duong Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Minh Hung highlighted the significance of the Moncada Barracks attack, led by Fidel Castro and over 130 young Cuban patriots.

The event brought the revolutionary struggle for the Cuban people and the entire Latin American region against imperialism, in defense of national sovereignty, and pursuit of social justice and progress.

The official emphasized that the friendship exchange was an opportunity to revisit the historic event that opened a new era of development for the Cuban revolution. He noted that the enduring bond between Viet Nam and Cuba, particularly between the people of Hai Duong and Cuba, continues to be strengthened through such exchanges.

He further expressed hope that all people, especially the younger generation, would gain a deeper understanding of the importance of strengthening the Viet Nam-Cuba friendship, ensuring that this legacy endures and thrives in the generations to come.

Deputy Ambassador of Cuba to Viet Nam Joy Puentes Saldise noted that, unlike previous years, the Cuban Embassy did not organize any commemorative activities this year. This decision was made out of respect, as both Cuba and Viet Nam are observing a period of national mourning for the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, a great friend of the Cuban people.

The Deputy Ambassador hopes that today’s friendship exchange will further strengthen the enduring Viet Nam-Cuba solidarity. The Cuban Embassy remains committed to fostering cooperation between localities in Cuba and Viet Nam in the future.

For his part, Vice President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations Nguyen Ngoc Hung highlighted the deep bond between the peoples of Viet Nam and Cuba, despite the geographical distance. He emphasized that the two countries have supported and assisted each other through difficult times.

The people of Viet Nam will forever remember the warm solidarity, invaluable support, and selfless assistance extended by the Cuban Party, State, and people towards Viet Nam’s revolutionary cause.

In recent times, the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and the Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Association have actively contributed to the relations between the peoples of both countries. Since its establishment, the Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Association has organized numerous meaningful activities, thereby fostering the special friendship between the two countries’ Parties and States.

"The Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and the Viet Nam-Cuba Friendship Association have always been deeply committed to nurturing the solidarity between our two countries. We will continue to stand alongside the Cuban Embassy in Viet Nam and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) in preserving and promoting the invaluable shared spiritual heritage of our two peoples. Under any circumstances, Viet Nam will always stand by Cuba, as Cuba has always stood by Viet Nam," stated Nguyen Ngoc Hung.
