Viet Nam reaffirms humanitarian assistance at UN meeting

Focusing on the critical issue of aiding those affected by conflicts and climate change, the event carried the theme “Putting humanity first in the face of conflicts and climate change: strengthening humanitarian assistance and respect for international humanitarian law, and promoting effectiveness, innovation and partnerships”.

In his address, Ambassador Giang expressed his concern over the alarming rise in humanitarian crises around the world, saying that millions are struggling to access essential aid due to logistical challenges.

To tackle these issues, Viet Nam calls for adherence to the UN Charter and international law, including the international humanitarian law. He urged countries and parties involved in conflicts to comply with obligations under international law and UN resolutions concerning civilian protection and critical infrastructure, as well as facilitate unimpeded, safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Countries need to enhance climate action to prevent climate-related disasters and humanitarian consequences via building early warning systems and local community resilience, he said, advocating for stronger partnerships between countries, relevant UN mechanisms, and international humanitarian organisations to ensure effective aid delivery.

Giang highlighted Viet Nam's participation in international humantarian relief efforts, including the situation in Gaza, Ukraine, and Myanmar, and affirmed the country's continued support for people facing humanitarian crises globally.

The meeting underscored the vital role of international law, particularly humanitarian law, in protecting civilians during conflicts. Participants also recognised the need for increased funding for humanitarian activities, effective climate action, and a more coordinated response from UN agencies to deliver assistance more efficiently./.
