25-year U.S-Vietnam relations: An extraordinary journey

“The relation between Vietnam and the U.S, looking back over the past 25 years, has been a miracle, and also an example of incredibility.”

That is the affirmation of the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam - Daniel Krittenbrink at the press conference to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-U.S. relations taking place in Hanoi on July 2nd.

Speaking at the press conference, Ambassador Daniel Krittenbrink stated that after 25 years, the Vietnam-U.S. relations are now at its best. 25 years ago, the two countries had almost no trading relations. Today, the total trade turnover between Vietnam and the U.S. has reached 77 billion USD per year.

There are more than 30,000 Vietnamese students studying in the U.S, who are most likely to be the perfect cultural ambassadors to foster co-operation and build up the future relationship between the two countries.

The ambassador also expressed his emotional feelings while talking to the two countries’ veterans during his recent visit to Thanh Hoa.

“We visited Ham Rong Bridge in Thanh Hoa with our hands joined. This is a symbolic activity as we were promoting healing, reconciliation, and moving forward to the future. Last year, I visited the Truong Son martyrs cemetery, this year I visited the one in Ho Chi Minh City" – said Mr. Daniel Krittenbrink, affirming that through these visits he wanted to show respect and honor to those who have sacrificed.

"I want to refer to former President Bill Clinton when he announced the normalization of Vietnam-U.S. relations 25 years ago: "We must not forget the past. We must not forget what has happened, but we can work together to promote reconciliation for the future.” - said Daniel Krittenbrink.

The U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam emphasized that the United States would keep its strong commitment to work with Vietnam to continue handling war consequences, cleaning up dioxin, helping people with disabilities, upholding humanitarian cooperation, and searching for missing martyrs.

Mr. Daniel Krittenbrink affirmed that the present and future cooperation between Vietnam and the United States, prompted by mutual respect for the past will contribute to building trust between the two countries. According to the U.S. diplomat, the biggest achievement is that Vietnam and the United States have become sincere friends and partners. The United States will continue to support Vietnam's future development and success.
