Proposals to Support Farmers and Develop Viet Nam's Coffee Industry

This was discussed at the meeting between Nguyen Ngoc Hung, Vice President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations, and representatives of the Global Coffee Platform (GCP), in Hanoi on May 10.

At the meeting, Caroline Glowka, Senior Manager Member Relations of GCP said: Viet Nam is one of the important coffee-producing regions in the world. Thanks to the support, coordination, and companionship of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and Vietnamese partners, the GCP's project implemented in the Central Highlands has reached positive achievements, namely improving knowledge for farmers, contributing to improving coffee beans productivity and quality, and increasing farmers' income.

Caroline Glowka said she would spread experience implementing projects in Viet Nam to replicate this model in other GCP member countries.

Lauren Weiss, GCP's Senior Manager Countries and Partnerships, looks forward to continuing to receive support from the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and the People's Aid Coordination Committee - PACCOM (a unit of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations), as well as Vietnamese partners, especially in fundraising activities.

Nguyen Ngoc Hung, Vice President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations, said that coffee is one of Viet Nam's main export products, accounting for 3% of the country's GDP. In 2023, coffee export turnover reached USD 4.24 billion. Vietnamese coffee beans have high quality, however, there are limitations in the processing technique. Viet Nam mainly exports raw beans to coffee processing countries, therefore consumers rarely know about Viet Nam coffee brands.

Nguyen Ngoc Hung hopes GCP will promote cooperation with farmers, businessmen, local authorities, and the government to support bringing Vietnamese coffee brands closer to international consumers. Vice President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations proposed that GCP continue to exchange information and share experiences, stories, and effective and sustainable coffee production and distribution models worldwide with Vietnamese farmers and partners.

The Global Coffee Platform was founded in 2016 in Switzerland as an association that aims to improve the sustainability of the coffee industry. Its members include coffee producers; farmers; roasting and processing units; coffee businesses; associations; donors; and countries. In 2023, the organization received a certificate of merit from the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations for its positive contributions to the economic, welfare, and social development of Viet Nam.
