Hundreds of international students compete in Vietnamese rhetoric competition

Hundreds of international students from 65 universities and colleges will compete in the Vietnamese Speech Contest - held for the first time on a nationwide scale.

The Vietnamese Speech Contest for foreign students was organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, opening on the morning of October 28 at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi National University.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc said that the contest promises to bring in-depth rhetorical performances in the context of global cultural exchange. According to him, the competition contributes to promoting the teaching and learning of Vietnamese, creating motivation for the innovation process and improving the quality of training in general and the quality of Vietnamese language training in particular.

“I believe that each entry is a unique creation, making an impression not only on international students but on all audiences, Vietnamese people, to see the country through multi-dimensional lenses. to love and understand more about our country,” he said.

The preliminary round took place on three days October 28, November 10 and November 3, corresponding to three competition clusters in the North, Central and South with 11 teams. The organizing committee said the contest was launched in August, attracting hundreds of international students from 10 universities and colleges in 11 provinces and cities.

This is the first time the Ministry of Education and Training has organized a speech contest for international students nationwide. In previous years, the competition was limited to international students from Laos.

Regarding the rules, each team will select 2-3 main debaters in Vietnamese, with a maximum presentation time of 7 minutes. This year, with the theme "Vietnam in me", contestants can share their knowledge about the country, people and culture of Vietnam; about solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and its home country.

12 excellent teams from three clusters will compete in the finals on December 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. The Ministry of Education and Training awarded one first prize, two second prizes, three third prizes and six consolation prizes. The specific reward level has not been announced.

According to Ministry statistics, there are currently about 22.000 foreign students studying in Vietnam. Previously, in the period 2016-2022, Vietnam received and trained more than 45.000 international students from 102 countries and territories. On average each year, 4.000-6.000 international students come to Vietnam, most of whom study Vietnamese and Vietnamese studies.
