ActionAid in company with Vietnam’s development

(Vietpeace) ActionAid is an international organization working in more than 40 countries to defeat poverty and inequalities. ActionAid International in Vietnam (AAV) is a part of ActionAid International (AAI) and is going to become a full member of AAI.

AAV has been operating in Vietnam for 20 years with long-term development programs in the North West, Central Highlands, Mekong Delta and urban poor areas. Applying human rights-based approach, AAV’s programme priorities for the years to come:

· Promote alternative livelihood and sustainable agriculture
· Advance accountability and people to people solidarity for social change, increase youth leadership and civil society credibility
· Promote equal access to quality education for all children
· Respond to disaster and climate change impacts with people-centered alternatives
· Build social and political alternatives for women and girls

AAV officially opened representative office in Vietnam in 1992 and implemented long-term development programs in the North West, Central Highlands, Mekong Delta and urban poor areas. With an annual average budget of £3 million, ActionAid has directly supported millions of people and different stakeholders at all level to strengthen awareness and capacity  and participate in individual and social advancement. In 2011, AAV supported to more than 214,000 people in disadvantaged areas in Vietnam, both in rural and urban areas in the Northern mountainous areas, Central Highlands and Mekong Delta.

AAV strengthens capacity for community and local partners and promotes significantly for Vietnamese image, voice and experiences to international friends.

In addition, AAV denies funds’organizations that have disadvantageous policies for the poor in Vietnam. Main source of funding for AAV is from individual donors in countries including England, Italy, Greece, Spain, Sweden and Ireland. AAV has about 13,000 regular donors and through reports to the donors, AAV contributes to the latest and truthful information about Vietnam’s history, culture, and people to international friends which builds friendship among peoples.

With the total amount of funding to Vietnam in 20 years reaching £30 million (equivalent to VND 900 billion), AAV has contributed significantly to poverty reduction and development in Vietnam. Although Vietnam has become a low middle income country and some organizations have changed their priorities and stopped cooperation, ActionAid continues to affirm long-term commitment to Vietnam. The Fifth National Strategy for the term 2012-2017 identified long-term programs which prioritize to respond to urban poverty, climate change, governance and increase youth leadership and women’s right.
